Social Network Rankings: GetGlue Off the Grid?

Not certain what is going on over at GetGlue these days (other than them pissing people off by changing their sticker policy), but they never posted the Top 10 lists for Dec 2nd through 8th and I haven't seen anything for last week yet either.  I'm trying to find out more information, but I don't know if they have suspended posting the rankings for now.  They have had them available for at least a year, so I don't know why they would stop, though the site was recently acquired by i.TV last month, so maybe they are in the process of restructuring right now.  If I get any more information or see the Top 10s get posted, I will pass that along.

As far as Nielsen's Twitter Rankings, American Horror Story: Coven has been the only entry there for the last two weeks with The Walking Dead now on its winter hiatus.  AHS ranked at the Number 5 slot for the week of Dec 2nd through 8th and at Number 8 last week. That will likely be it for genre shows on that list until AHS returns in January.

Social Network Rankings: Almost Human Still in the Top 10, Agents of SHIELD Creeping Up

FOX's Almost Human may be currently experiencing a ratings dive, but it's still getting some heavy activity tracking from the GetGlue broadcast network charts.  It slipped to the Number 4 slot for this last week which is a much smaller drop than what its ratings saw.  Whether that can help keep the show afloat, though, remains to be seen.  Agents of SHIELD continues its rise up the GetGlue broadcast network charts as it improved to the Number 3 slot this past week.  That show has also been enjoying a ratings resurgence so it looks like it could be getting itself back on track.  There were only six total genre shows in the broadcast net Top 10 this past week (instead of the usual seven to eight), but that was because two of the CW regulars (Arrow and Vampire Diaries) were preempted for holiday programming.  FX's American Horror Story was also preempted last week, but it still showed up in the GetGlue cable Top 10 though it disappeared from the Nielsen Twitter Rankings..  And Syfy's Haven was preempted leading it to drop out of the GetGlue cable Top 10.  So do these numbers impact network decision making when it comes to renewing or cancelling a show?  I discuss that in more detail at this link.

Social Network Rankings: Almost Human Tops GetGlue Chart but Doesn't Make it to Nielsen Twitter Rankings

FOX's Almost Human had an impressive debut ratings-wise on November 18th and also scored well on the GetGlue Top 10 for broadcast network shows where it landed in the top slot.  The second episode of the series dropped considerably in the ratings, so it will be interesting to see how its social activity tracks with the latest numbers due out in a few days.  And the show did not manage to land in the Nielsen Top 10 for their Twitter Rankings which I thought it would.  Again, the only genre shows in that list were The Walking Dead and American Horror Story and they slipped a few rungs for the week of November 18th to 24th.  Back on the GetGlue Top 10, Agents of SHIELD improved its status a bit, rising to the Number 4 slot as most of the other usual genre suspects also showed up on that list.  The Originals dropped out, but it was preempted that week.  For the GetGlue Cable Top 10, Doctor Who skyrocketed to the top which is no surprise with all of the hype for that show's 50th anniversary episode and Haven managed to creep back in at the Number 9 spot.  So do these numbers impact network decision making when it comes to renewing or cancelling a show?  I discuss that in more detail at this link.

Social Network Rankings: Once Upon A Time Tops the GetGlue Broadcast Network Chart

ABC's Once Upon A Time may be struggling some with its ratings in its third season, but it remains pretty popular on the social networks according to GetGlue as that one topped the chart of broadcast network shows for the week of November 11th through the 17th.  Agents of SHIELD also held steady on that chart despite its ratings struggles.  Rounding out the broadcast net Top 10 were Sleepy Hollow and the usual four CW shows (Vampire Diaries, Supernatural, The Originals, and Arrow).  On the GetGlue cable Top 10, we saw the usual suspects with The Walking Dead and American Horror Story at the top of the list and The Witches of East End edging up to the Number 5 slot.  Syfy's Haven slipped off the list this week, though.  And on the Nielsen Twitter Rankings, The Walking Dead and American Horror Story made their usual appearances as the only genre shows on that list.  I'm going to take a guess that Almost Human will show up in the GetGlue broadcast net Top 10 when next week's chart hits based on the buzz leading up to that one's season premiere earlier this week.  So do these numbers impact network decision making when it comes to renewing or cancelling a show?  I discuss that in more detail at this link.

Social Network Ranking: Sleepy Hollow and Agents of SHIELD Return to the GetGlue Top 10

For the week of November 4th to 10th, Sleepy Hollow and Agents of SHIELD both made a return appearance on the GetGlue Top 10 for broadcast network shows.  Both shows had previously been in repeats, so they dropped out of the Top 10 , but returned last week at the Number 3 and Number 5 slots respectively.  All four of the usual CW shows (Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Arrow, and The Originals) remained in the Top 10 and Once Upon A Time remained high on the list in the Number 2 slot.  Both of NBC’s Friday night shows, Grimm and Dracula, dropped out of the broadcast net Top 10 last week and coincidentally both experienced ratings drops (more on that at this link).  In GetGlue’s Cable Top 10, the usual suspects were there with The Walking Dead and American Horror Story topping the list and The Witches of East End and Haven (returning after a one week absence) taking up the rear of the list.  And for the Nielsen Twitter Rankings, again only The Walking Dead and American Horror Story made it into the Top 10.  So do these numbers impact network decision making when it comes to renewing or cancelling a show?  I discuss that in more detail at this link.

Social Network Rankings: Grimm and Dracula Drop, Supernatural and Other CW Genre Shows Rise

After NBC's Friday night supernatural shows piqued the interest of GetGlue followers with their debuts two weeks ago, both shows dropped notably in their second week based on that site's tracking of people checking in on them.  Grimm dropped from the Number 1 to the Number 7 slot and Dracula dropped from Number 4 to Number 6.  Meanwhile, all of the CW shows that have being doing well on that chart rose this past week (despite drops in their Nielsen numbers) as Supernatural took the top slot followed by Vampire Diaries (#2), Arrow (#4), and The Originals (#5).  ABC's Once Upon A Time rounded out the Top 5 while Agents of SHIELD dropped out of the Top 10, though it was  repeat last week.   The Walking Dead and American Horror Story held onto the top 2 slots of GetGlue's cable chart and those two were once again the only genre shows for the week in Nieslens Twitter Ratings.  So do these numbers impact network decision making when it comes to renewing or cancelling a show?  I discuss that in more detail at this link.

Social Network Rankings: Grimm and Dracula Scare Up Some Chatter with Their Debuts

NBC’s two hour Friday night supernatural block kicked off this last week with ratings wins for both returning Grimm and new series Dracula (more on that at this link) and also generated a fair amount of activity on the social networks.  The former series skyrocketed to the top of the GetGlue charts for the broadcast networks for this past week and the latter landed in the fourth slot of the Top 10.  In general--as with the previous rankings--science fiction and fantasy continued to dominate the top slots of the broadcast net rankings, taking eight out of the ten places once again.  And The CW continued to perform well there with the same four entries as the previous week (Supernatural, Vampire Diaries, Arrow, and The Originals).  ABC’s Once Upon A Time in Wonderland slipped out of the Top 10 in its third week as that one also continues to fall in the Nielsen ratings (more on that at this link).  On the GetGlue Cable Top 10, five slots were taken by science fiction and fantasy shows with Doctor Who popping in (even though the show is still in repeats), likely bolstered by all of the buzz surrounding the upcoming 50th anniversary.  In the Nieslen Twitter Rankings, again only The Walking Dead and American Horror Story made it into the Top 10 with the former holding steady at Number 2 and the latter slipping to Number 4.  So do these numbers impact network decision making when it comes to renewing or cancelling a show?  I discuss that in more detail at this link.

Social Network Rankings: Supernatural and Other Genre Shows Continue to Dominate GetGlue Charts

Once again, genre shows are dominating GetGlue's Top 10 charts which track social activity related to programs currently on the air.  Supernatural took the top spot for broadcast network shows and three other series from fifth place CW also made the Top 10: Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Arrow.  ABC's Once Upon A Time in Wonderland made the list for a second week in row despite its poor ratings based on the Nielsen numbers.  I discuss whether that may help the show in a bit more detail at this link.  Of course The Walking Dead continues to reign atop GetGlue's Cable Top 10 with American Horror Story just behind it.  And low rated Syfy entry Haven creeped back into the lower rungs of the list which may give it a slightly better chance of winning at least one more season.  For the Nielsen Twitter Ratings, only The Walking Dead and American Horror Story made it into the Top 10 among genre shows, and for both of those it is their second week in a row on the list.

Social Network Rankings: The Walking Dead (Of Course) Tops Nielsen Twitter Rankings and GetGlue

The social network ratings--which track activity on Twitter, GetGlue, and other social sites--reflect the regular ratings numbers for the past week to an extent with high-rated shows like The Walking Dead, Sleepy Hollow, American Horror Story, and Agents of SHIELD all making appearances.   But then several shows lagging in the ratings, especially The CW entries, are showing up as well.  And for the GetGlue Top 10s, eight entries on the broadcast network list are genre shows and four are from The CW.  Then four on the cable list are genre shows, so that site is tracking a lot of activity around some of these series that the regular Nielsen ratings might miss.  Whether that translates to more money from advertisers (which is necessary to keep a show alive) remains to be seen, because these tracking systems are relatively new.  But it will be interesting to see if a show like Once Upon A Time in Wonderland (at #6 on the GetGlue chart) could survive despite struggling ratings if it stays popular in the social networks.  Or if its social network activity to translate into improving ratings over the coming weeks.  Keep an eye on this column to see how things play out.

Here are the genre shows in the Top 10 of Nielsen Twitter ratings for Oct 7th to 13th:

1. The Walking Dead (AMC) (Prior Week – n/a)
3. American Horror Story: Coven (FX) (Prior Week – n/a)

Here are the genre shows in the GetGlue Top 10s for Oct 7th to 13th:

Broadcast Network Top 10:

1. Once Upon A Time (ABC) (Prior Week - #7)
2. Supernatural (CW) (Prior Week - n/a)
4. Sleepy Hollow (FOX) (Prior Week - #2)
5. The Originals (CW) (Prior Week - #1)
6. Once Upon A Time in Wonderland (ABC) (Prior Week - n/a)
7. Agents of SHIELD (ABC) (Prior Week - #6)
8. Vampire Diaries (CW) (Prior Week - #9)
9. Arrow (CW) (Prior Week - n/a)

Cable Top 10:

1. The Walking Dead (AMC) (Prior Week - n/a)
2. American Horror Story: Coven (FX) (Prior Week - n/a)
5. The Witches of East End (LifeTime) (Prior Week - #3)
9. Orphan Black (BBCA) In Repeats (Prior Week - #6)

Social Network Rankings: Vampire Diaries Scores in Nielsen Twitter Rankings, The Originals Tops GetGlue

We are starting to see some changes afoot with Nielsen now tracking Twitter activity related to the live broadcast of TV shows and GetGlue continuing to track the general social network activity buzzing around a show.  Whether these will impact a show's survival remains to be seen (though I believe it did help Hannibal last season, more on that in an upcoming post), but I will begin tracking those numbers here on a weekly basis going forward.

For the first week of Nielsen’s new tracking, which covered the period from Sept 30th to Oct 6th, only one genre show--Vampire Diaries--made it to the Top 10 (which is all that they are publishing for now).  That's an interesting entry, though, because that one is low rated in comparison to the overall Prime Time entries for the broadcast networks, but it ranked just behind highly rated The Voice on this new scale and above other ratings darlings like Dancing With the Stars and The X-Factor.  I would tend to think this is registering the younger skewing viewers (which Vampire Diaries definitely appeals to) because they tend to be more active on the social networking sites.  But this is definitely something to watch closely this year and a way that fans can generate some attention for their shows if they are struggling in the ratings.  You can see the full Top 10 for the week of Sept 30 - Oct 6 at this link.

The GetGlue charts track the number of check-ins for a show at their site and I believe the numbers also include social activity tracked from Twitter and other sites.  And I think their numbers are for the entire tracking period, not just right before, during, and after the broadcast.  I'm currently trying to get some clarification from them on this.

Following are the genre shows in the GetGlue Top 10s for the first three weeks of the season:

Week of Sept 30 - Oct 6

Broadcast Network Top 10:
1. The Originals (CW)
2. Sleepy Hollow (FOX)
6. Agents of SHIELD (ABC)
7. Once Upon A Time (ABC)
9. Vampire Diaries (CW)

Cable Top 10:
3. The Witches of East End (LifeTime)
7. Haven (Syfy)
9. Orphan Black (BBCA) In Repeats

Week of Sept 23-29:

Broadcast Network Top 10:
1. Agents of SHIELD (ABC)
3. Sleepy Hollow (FOX)
4. Once Upon A Time (ABC)

Cable Top 10:
5. Doctor Who (BBCA) In Repeats
8. Haven (Syfy)
10. Orphan Black (BBCA) In Repeats

Week of Sept 16-22:

Broadcast Network Top 10:
1. Sleepy Hollow (FOX)
7. Supernatural (CW) In Repeats
10. Under the Dome (CBS) Summer Series, Finale

Cable Top 10:
6. Orphan Black (BBCA) In Repeats
7. Haven (Syfy)
10. Torchwood: Miracle Day (BBCA) Encore Run

Why Were They Cancelled?
The Plight of Science Fiction and Fantasy Television in the Face of the Unforgiving Nielsens and Networks

Ever wondered why your favorite science fiction and/or fantasy show disappeared from the television schedule, never to deliver anymore new episodes? The reason why, most likely, is that it was cancelled because its ratings were low. And this book looks at those many cancelled sci fi/fantasy shows as well as the Neilsen ratings and television networks that dictate their fates. Available now for only $1.99 on Kindle from Amazon.com.
