Cancellation Threat for a Returning Series Using Syfy’s Haven as an Example

Syfy’s supernatural drama series Haven just kicked off its fourth season and its ratings are already suggesting that the show may not survive into a fifth year.  I have had several fans of the show ask why I am predicting a possible cancellation for the show, so I will take this opportunity to take a quick look at the cancellation threat for returning shows in general using Haven as my starting example.

First and foremost, the survival of television series these days is heavily determined (as it has been for the past half century and more) by the monolithic Nielsen Company that reports the ratings which measure audience size.  The primary number focused on these days is the rating in the 18-49 demographic because that is the group that most advertisers target and these sponsors rely on the measurements to determine which shows to buy advertising time on.  You can read a bit more about how the ratings work at my FAQ and also over at TV by the NumbersRead the full article at CancelledScifi.com.

  1. This channel does not even SHOW UP on my TV and we have a huge amount of channels. There’s no channel where it’s offered, it doesn’t even say “you must subscribe to this channel to get this show” thing that I usually see, the new episodes simply DON”T SHOW UP. I’m in Vancouver, Canada, we have nearly almost every channel except PPV with our provider, how is it that I ONLY GET RERUNS while we’re in a NEW season of Haven right now and no It’s not because of Thanksgiving, I checked this a couple weeks ago when there was a NEW episode online that night & checked future dates. I watch Haven online but I wanted to start turning the TV on so viewership would count it cuz I heard they don’t count online viewing. If this is a thing and not just me then..WTH!!!! Of course viewership is down, PEPLE DON”T GET THE DAMN CHANNEL. Syfy may be doing a bad job of advertising their shows, their channel, whatever the other well known channels do. Eureka, Warehouse 13 and Haven have all been pretty popular shows with those that know about it…is that the problem…people don’t know about it cuz it’s NOT AIRING IN THE COUNTRY IT’S FILMED IN. It’s so annoying, I adored all 3 shows and there’s only so many cancellations a person can go through. It seems like a pattern…well loved shows getting cancelled…It just seems like this network is having issues somewhere, the shows are great, but this is pattern I’m not liking and I’m tired of it.

  2. Haven S4 hasn't shown up in Australia as yet, good thing we can download. With the array of TV channels & online content, legal or otherwise, how is any show going to rate. The adds drive us made and the live shows run 45 min over time, it's more enjoyable to just buy the DVD's

  3. Another option is to donate money toward the making of a season 5 like the fans did for the new Veronica Mars movie.

  7. I have noticed a pattern with the syfy shows. Whenever I find a series that I enjoy it gets cancelled at the end of the season (which is usually not long after). The decision to allow another season should be in the viewer rating at the end of the season, not at the beginning. Please dont do the same thing again. Especially with a program as good as Haven.

  8. I watched seasons 1-3 of Haven on netflix. I can't wait for season 4 to hit. I do have syfy but can't find Haven in the listing. Please make a season 5

    1. Haven had it's season finale before Christmas in the U.S. so it probably won't be predictable about scheduling reruns. I'd love to see season 5 especially after getting one of my friends hooked so I'd have someone to watch it with.

  9. I live in Oklahoma. We did NOT get season 2 and 3 of Haven on Syfy. Apparently they decided NOT to show it at all. I had to watch it from Netflix. Syfy is owned by NBC. Go figure. They'll make damned sure to put that WWE crap on, and take all the good shows off. They'll even make sure that Face Off crap stays on. I seriously doubt anyone cares about that game show trash. Syfy needs to get their act together. If they are going to run a freaking show, they need to run it and not make us watch a triple rerun of some stupid Sharknado movie. I'm fed up with that B-Movie garbage. Production is very poor on them anyway. So cheesy. Hey SyFy, I have a good plan for you. Quit the s*** shows and keep the good stuff like Haven! No more excuses. Spreading the shows so far apart where you almost have 2 years before it starts the new season is ignorant! GET WITH IT SYFY!

  12. My dad was the biggest scfy fan I know and since i could remember it's the only channel he had up on his tv, thus making all of his children scfy fans as well, after he passed we still watched we even keep scfy runnin all day on one tv just in case he is watching still. We have watch the station change over the years, seen shows come in go, we were big fans of all the stargates and after they got cancelled We started losing interest then warehouse 13 and haven happened (speaking for myself) I'm sad to see warehouse 13 go it was getting so real and now its gone, please don't cancel haven anytime soon we love this show.
